Walk the Cities of the Indus
A two-week, specialist-led field seminar in India focused on the Indus Valley Civilization, ancient Tamil Nadu, and the deep past of South Asia.
| Featured site: Dholavira, one of the largest Harappan sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
A site-based seminar for intellectually curious travelers
This program is designed for travelers who want more than a standard cultural tour. It combines great archaeological sites, museum visits, artifacts, and lively expert discussion across North and South India in a way that makes the deep past of South Asia newly vivid.
On the itinerary
Delhi, Rakhigarhi, Dholavira, Lothal, Chennai, Madurai, Keeladi, and Adichanallur — an itinerary that brings Harappan cities and the archaeology of ancient Tamil Nadu into one compelling journey.
Led by specialists
With linguist and Indus script specialist Dr. Steven C. Bonta, archaeologist Nakul Chhabra in the north, and Vijay Prabhat Kamalakara in the south.

What makes this tour distinctive
The emphasis is not only on monuments, but also on how ancient people actually lived: their water systems, city planning, pottery, weights, seals, burial forms, and the yet undeciphered script question. Dholavira’s reservoirs, citadel, and famous signboard are central to the discussion, alongside later South Indian evidence that helps frame larger questions about continuity without forcing simplistic answers.
